So, you think you need a new dishwasher, but you don’t know the why, where or how. Lucky for you we have a few basic pointers as to what to look for in a new dishwasher. So whether you’ve never owned a dishwasher before or are an old pro at buying dishwashers, there should be a few handy tips in here. Let’s just start off by saying, that you’ve made a great choice in getting a dishwasher at all. The modern models available are very water and energy efficient, plus have the extra benefit of being able to disinfect your plates and cutlery in a way you could never do by hand.

The Many Types Of Dishwashers

Actually, there really aren’t that many basic dishwasher types. There are two basic types, and they are portable, and undercounter. The manufacturers will hype a bunch of differences between the two, but there’s only one good reason why I would buy a portable. If I was living in a rental accommodation like an apartment, and I wanted to take the dishwasher with me when I left. Otherwise, an undercounter takes less space, and blends in much better with your existing kitchen. I suppose if money is a concern, then a portable wouldn’t have the installation costs that an undercounter would have.

Does Your Dishwasher Perform?

One of the biggest factors to influence the performance of your dishwasher, is the temperature of the water it is using. Manufacturers usually recommend that the hot water a dishwasher uses, be around 135 to 145 degreesfarenheit . If your water heater is not sending water to the dishwasher that is at least 120 degrees your dishwasher will under perform. Check the water at the tap nearest to your Dishwasher with a thermometer to find out what temperature your dishwasher is using.

Size Does Matter

Consider the size of the dishwasher you’ll need. A family of two will need a smaller dishwasher then a family of six. Even if you have enough dishes to allow a family of two to wait over a week to run the dishwasher, it’s probably a bad idea to buy a bigger model. Dishwashers should be run at least once a week to keep them lubricated, and to prevent the seals from drying out. A smaller family should just get a smaller dishwasher, and run it more frequently.

Running Out Of Gas

In these days of energy conscious thinking, we should all do our part in minimizing our energy uses. While all dishwashers are required by law to meet minimum federal energy requirements, some do even better. Dishwashers with the ENERGY STAR logo, will use a minimum of 25 percent less energy than those who don’t. Your great great great grandchildren will thank you.

So, that should be enough to get started in the wonderful world of dishwasher shopping. Keep looking around till you find the one that fits your needs and lifestyle.

It’s May in Phoenix, Arizona and it’s getting hot! You and your retired Snowbird friends are heading for a cooler climate. Here are 35 strategies to help you secure your home for your departure.
There are a number of general things to do in preparation for “flying north.” Make sure to update your emergency contact information with your Home Owners or Community Association including giving them the name of your emergency key holder and who has a key. If available, sign up for any Vacation Watch programs your community offers. Some police departments have vacation check programs. Notify them, and generally they will do a routine check of the house. While some will only drive by and look for suspicious activity, some will get out of their vehicles and inspect the grounds looking for any break-ins. If contact information is left with the police, they can phone the homeowners if there has been a break-in or disturbance. Check to see if you need to renew your driver’s licenses and/or vehicle plates before leaving.

Arrange for services such as landscaping, pest control and pool services if needed. Contact your internet provider and cable company to stop service or start vacation hold. Arrange for mail forwarding and newspaper stop. Ask a neighbor to pick up stray newspapers, flyers, packages etc. and make sure that neighbor has your contact information and a key. Ask the neighbor to park in your driveway occasionally to make the home looks occupied. Consider using a professional home watch company to care for your home.

If you have never done so, take photographs or videos of all your expensive items. If needed this would be helpful for both the police and the insurance agency to identify the stolen goods. Store valuables in a place that a burglar could not access. (i.e., take jewelry to a safe-deposit box, lock computers in closets, hide keys to extra cars, etc.) Be sure to remove all valuables from sight.

In the kitchen remove food from the house to discourage pests. Store staples such as sugar or flour in sealed metal, glass or thick plastic containers.  The best refrigerator solution is to turn it off, empty it and prop open the doors. The next best solution is to empty out items which will spoil and add items like bottles of water, etc. to help retain the cold and help the unit use less energy. Don’t forget to turn off the ice maker and place a box of baking soda in the refrigerator to absorb odors. If you have candles and plan to leave your refrigerator on, place the candles in the fridge so they don’t soften during the summer.

Regarding other appliances, put 2-3 tbsp. of vegetable oil in the Dishwasher to keep the seals moist. Do not latch the door. Also put 2-3 tbsp. of vegetable oil in the garbage disposal to help keep it from locking up. Remember to unplug other appliances throughout the house. Open the door on the clothes washer.

With telephones turn off the ringers so thieves can’t hear if no one is answering the phone. Don’t leave a message on the answering machine that tells callers you’re out-of-town. Instead, say you’re away from the phone and you’ll get back to them.

To help add moisture for the furniture place several 5 gallon buckets of water around the house. Close blinds. If using timers, leave the blinds open slightly to let light shine out so the home looks occupied. Open all doors to rooms and closets to allow for air flow.

Regarding water, in the bathrooms wrap toilet bowls with cling wrap to keep the water from evaporating. Do not put bleach tablets in the tank. Turn off inside water valves at the washer, under sinks, and at toilets. Valves like to be used. Better yet, shut off the main water valve when leaving.

Change the furnace filter(s) especially if you are leaving the A/C on. You could turn it off completely but if not, set it to a high temperature (95) in the summer.  Check / close fireplace damper. Lock all doors and windows placing wood dowels in the tracks of sliders where possible.

Outside the home pick the remaining ripe fruit from trees to avoid falling fruit accumulating under the tree. Trim trees and bushes away from the house so as not to obscure windows and doors. Set the irrigation timer to the summer watering cycle. Replace the 9v battery if not done so in a while. Drain water features and treat with appropriate chemicals to avoid mosquito infestation.  Store the patio furniture and barbecue grill in the garage.Â

Speaking of the garage, disconnect the car battery. Leave golf cart batteries on trickle charge.  Fill the golf cart batteries and car battery. Turn the water heater to vacation or pilot. Disconnect hot water circulator or set it to the off position.

Just before leaving shut off the house main water valve but do not touch the landscaping water valves. Unplug the garage door opener or lock garage door. Turn on the security system if you have one. Double check that all doors and windows are locked making sure the door between the garage and the house is locked. Leave by the front door and lock it!

Now you’re set to enjoy your trip!

Dog Bowls – Why [...]

Whether you have brought a new puppy home, or have a dog for many years, dog bowls are necessary to give food or water to your pooch. Just like with any other dog item, you should stop to consider a few important factors before you buy dog bowls for your precious pet.

Â

Dog Bowls – Why Do I Need One?

Dog bowls are really convenient and offer your dog the means to get nourished and quench his thirst. Imagine, if you dog didn’t get water to drink when he was thirsty, he’d probably get very sick due to dehydration. But now all you need to do is fill the dog bowl with fresh water, every morning and evening, and let you precious pooch quench his thirst whenever he wants! Dog bowls are also a necessity because they ensure that your dog is trained to eat, drink, and urinate outside the house. Dog urine could be problem is the pet is not house trained properly.

Â

Since there are dog bowls for all dog breeds, the bowl size is a crucial consideration depending on the needs and requirements of your dog. Most pet owners opt for dog bowls that have a water bowl on one side and food bowl on the other. But don’t limit your choices, because there are some really exciting choices for dog bowls in the market! From stainless steel to plastic to glass, dog bowls need to easy to clean, rough and tough, and should defeat bacteria from growing.

Â

Small dogs require small dog bowls, while larger dogs require larger dog bowls because they require more food and water.

Â

Dog Bowls – Here’s What You Need To Look For

Easy to clean

Spill proof

Durable

Easy to maintain

Dishwasher safe

Perfectly sized for your breed

Safe to use

Â

Dog Bowls – Best Tip Ever!

One of the best types of dog bowls is those that are made of stainless steel and have a rubber bottom with tapered sides. While these bowls are heavy, the rubber bottom ensures that your dog is unable to push his bowl and spill its contents on the floor. The tapered sides have been designed to prevent tipping. And best of all, stainless steel used to makes these dog bowls is not just durable, but easy to clean, Dishwasher safe, and can’t be chewed, broken or tampered with. Remember to buy a dog bowl that is large enough to contain at least enough water to last a day depending on the size of your canine friend.

Â

Dog Bowls – Top Shopping Tips

If your dog doesn’t drink enough water, dog urine may become a problem. An attractive, yet functional dog bowl will not just invite the dog to consume water, but also offer him comfort while drinking water. Here’s what you need to look for:

Â

Durable and indestructible dog bowls that can’t be broken, chewed, or thrashed around. Must avoid – light weight plastic, glass, and pottery dog bowls.

Consider buying bowl holders that prevent the dog bowls from sliding, overturning, or skidding on the ground or floor.

Â

Tip: A dog drinks about 25 ml of water per pound/day or less than an ounce/pound. A 15 pound dog would require a dog bowl that can hold around 15 ounces of water.

Variously known as Apartment Hotel, Apart Hotel or Apart-Hotel, ApartHotels are a type of accommodation, described as “a serviced apartment complex that uses a hotel style booking system.” Similar to renting an apartment, the ApartHotel has no fixed contract and occupants can “check out” whenever they wish.

Unlike the rigid format of a hotel room, the ApartHotel system is more flexible, offering a complete and fully fitted apartment. These complexes are usually custom built and similar to a hotel complex containing a varied number of apartments. The length of stay in aparthotels varies anywhere from a few days or months to as long as several years. Prices in an aparthotel are normally cheaper than a regular hotel. People who choose to stay in an aparthotel use them as a home away from home, which usually provides them with a place that is fitted out with everything an average home would require.

First created in holiday destinations for families needing to “live” in an apartment rather than just “stay” in a hotel, the ApartHotel provided a “holiday home” but were generally serviced. In time, these apartments evolved into complete homes, allowing the occupants to do everything they would in a home, such as cleaning, cooking, and washing.

Another positive aspect of the aparthotel is their location in prime locations with panoramic views of cities seen through wall-to-wall windows. Upscale appointments such as broadband connections, interactive TV, servicing and integrated kitchen and bathrooms are other desirable features. High quality furnishings such as leather sofas in the living area and king sized beds raise the level of the hotel experience.
While those are the more luxurious elements, basic accommodations such as satellite or cable TV, washer, dryer, Dishwasher, oven, fridge, freezer and other everyday appliances are present as in any complete household.

If you are seeking the best of both worlds, the fusion character of the aparthotel has become the lodging du jour, offering all the amenities of the hotel stay while permitting you to kick back, be yourself, and to make yourself right at home.
